Date: Wednesday 12th October, 11.30a.m. to 12.30p.m Online via Microsoft Teams (you must register to receive the invitation - see below) Speaker: Dr Mattéa Finelli Uncovering the redox mechanisms contributing to Alzheimer's disease Neurodegenerative diseases represent one of the largest healthcare burdens worldwide and the incidence of these disorders rises with increased life expectancy; however, there is currently no disease-modifying treatment available. Therefore, it is vitally important, both for the benefit of patients and societies, to find effective therapies for these conditions.  Oxidative and nitrosative stresses are cellular stresses that arise from the excessive accumulation of reactive oxygen species and reactive nitrogen species produced by the energy metabolism of the cells. Oxidative and nitrosative stresses are well-established contributors to the neurodegenerative process, however the underlying mechanims remain unclear. Our group dissects how these stresses affect communication between different cell types in the brain and how they play an active role in the selective death of neurons in neurodegenerative conditions. Using a combination of advanced proteomics and molecular approaches applied to human stem cell-derived cultures, we are currently identifying the proteins secreted by cells of the brain to communicate with one another and explore how these proteins are altered in Alzheimer’s disease. We are exploring how this in turn detrimentally affects cell-cell crosstalk, function/survival of neurons, and ultimately contributing to the pathophysiology of Alzheimer’s disease. The secreted proteins identified will be tested in the future as potential new diagnosis/prognosis biomarkers for Alzheimer’s disease.        Dr Mattéa Finelli completed her DPhil at the University of Oxford (2011). She did a first postdoc at Mount Sinai School of Medicine, New York followed by a second postdoc at the University of Oxford. Over her career, Mattéa has acquired extensive expertise in a wide range of molecular and cellular approaches, animal models, as well as in transcriptomics, metabolomics and proteomics. Mattéa started her own independent research group at the University of Nottingham in January 2020 as an Anne McLaren Fellow. Her main research focus centers around the role of oxidative and nitrosative stresses and redox mechanisms in the pathophysiology of neurodegenerative conditions, in particular Alzheimer’s disease. Her research aims to shed light on the molecular mechanisms of Alzheimer’s disease, and to longer-term open new avenues for translational research on redox-based therapeutic approaches to improve health and survival of neurons in this condition.   Please note that you will need to register in order to access the seminar, and you will need to have access to Microsoft Teams.
