The Multicentre Monitoring of Self Harm in England study is co-ordinated by the Centre for Suicide Research at the University of Oxford and runs in Oxford, Manchester, Leeds and Derby.
There are several aims, including: 1) to monitor self-harm presentations locally and to provide this information to the national centre; 2) detection of changing patterns of self-harm ; 3) provision of information relevant to healthcare costs of self-harm; and 4) provision of a database that can be used to evaluate national preventative initiatives.Derby joined the study in 2007, however, due to the foresight of Keith Waters and the Mental Health Liaison Team in seeking advice from Oxford several years ago regarding important data fields to collect, we were able to provide data from 2000. There are over 1,700 presentations of self-harm at A&E in Derby per year.
This study has recently been adopted onto the MHRN Portfolio and, thanks to the work of the Mental Health Liaison Team, has greatly increased the profile of the East Midlands Hub and Derbyshire Mental Health Services NHS Trust.
