One person in four over the age of 80 is likely to develop dementia – and now the Institute of Mental Health is looking to provide an internet-based training programme to help educate home carers and health and social care professionals.
The Improving Dementia Education and Awareness (IDEA) project seeks to bring together the most up-to-date, interactive and user-friendly dementia training materials in one, internet-based educational tool. Many materials exist on the internet but they can be hard to find and have no assurance of accuracy. IDEA will consolidate teaching materials and facilitate on-going, systematic evaluation of materials so we can continually promote best practice for carers of people with dementia. The work will build on the success of the Institute’s involvement in the KUF (Knowledge and Understanding Framework) for working effectively with people with personality disorder which has developed a well-received Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) for students.
The IDEA project proposal has been submitted to the University of Nottingham’s Impact campaign, the largest fund-raising campaign in the organisation’s history, with an appeal for all health and well-being projects being launched on 18 October 2011 at the University Park.
