Subsequently the Academic Board received a further licence from the OUVS to award bachelors and masters degrees from 2009, in particular to award these degrees in the area of personality disorder studies, for which the Institute of Mental Health had a contract from the Department of Health to develop a Knowledge and Understanding Framework for personality disorder. These degrees are being launched in 2010.
The Academic Board is licensed to expand the areas in which it can offer Open University awards in future, and a number of other degrees are under consideration.

Head of Section: Professor Clive E Adams
The Cochrane Schizophrenia Group is concerned with the evaluation of the prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of people with non-affective, functional, psychotic illnesses.
The work of the group concentrates on three main areas. The first is the preparation, publication and maintenance of systematic reviews of the effects of interventions for schizophrenia. These reviews are published quarterly on the Cochrane Library, and are updated periodically to incorporate new research as it becomes available on the dedicated website http://szg.cochrane.org/en/index.html
The second is the development and maintenance of a specialised register of trials relevant to the scope of the group’s work and this has been a fruitful area of original research.
The third area of work is undertaking real-world randomised trials. Large high quality studies have been carried out in Brazil, India and the UK. The Group is now working with partners in Finland, Brazil and the UK designing randomised studies that are truly relevant to everyday care.
The editorial base is located within the Institute but the editors are based around the world. The Group works with 500 active reviewers in 21 different countries to ensure high standards and spread the learning.

Lead for the Unit: Dr Michael Ferriter
The internationally recognised tool for summarising the evidence of what interventions work or do not work in health care is the systematic review. The Literature and Evidence Research Unit (LERU) exists to carry out high quality systematic reviews of treatments and interventions based on established methodologies developed by leaders in the field such as the Cochrane Collaboration.
The Unit receives commissions both from within the Trust and also external commissions and grant funded projects. Our academic base is within the Section of Forensic Mental Health and our offices are at the Clair Chilvers Centre at Rampton Hospital.
